OK, we know that you are thinking that this is a class for making model cars, planes or boats from plastic kits. Well,
guess what, you are wrong! This is a real modeling class that will teach the student how to create (conceptualize) from
basic building blocks fantastic creations of three dimensional items, much like an architect would build to present his
ideas to a client. Through the use of basic mathematics, a ruler, matt board, scale woods, plastics, glue and other
building materials you will create a model buildings or other objects using blue prints and working in 1/4" scale. The
student will learn how to take a vision (concept) and convert it to a fantastic three dimensional object. This will be a
great class!! Parents are encouraged to attend at no additional cost to observe and participate in this class.

ELEMENTARY MATH CLASS
CLASSES TAUGHT BY DOROTHY McCANDLISS
CONTACT: Dorothy McCandliss on e-mail: dorothymccandliss@sbcglobal.net
E-mail me with your request to register for classes and your questions.
If urgent call: (626) 590-5883 Cell
IMPORTANT NOTICE: If there is a scheduling conflict with other EIE classes, PLEASE e-mail Dorothy.
She tries hard to accommodate requests.
2009-2010 Classes start September 8, 2009
Maximum is 12 students per class
Class fees are paid up front. If necessary, fees can be broken into 4 payments-add a $15 billing fee.
Math classes can be paid for through Sky Mountain Charter and Golden Valley Charter)
Add a charter billing fee of $25 per semester/per student to the cost of the class.
MATH 4
Learn multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, word problems and basic geometry. The skill level of this
class is equivalent to 4th and 5th grade math. This class usually has six or fewer students so students go at their own
rate and receive individualized instruction. Students show me what they know at the beginning of the year and are
placed appropriately in the workbook. Students sometimes use the Keys to Fractions, Decimals and Measurement for
variety or supplimental work. The class textbook, Spectrum Math Workbooks, is available at EIE.
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 3:20 - 4:00 PM
COST: $180 per semester
MATH 5
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 2:35 - 3:15 PM
COST: $180 per semester
MATH 6
Polish multiplication and division with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Apply these skills to word problems.
Learn word patterns and "code" words that tell us to add, subtract, multiply or divide to solve the word problems. Sixth
grade introduces percents and changing percents to decimals and fractions and back again. Convert units of
measurement in English system (inches, feet, miles) and Metric. Practice basic geometry skills, graphs and charts. If
we have six or fewer students, this class will be indepentent study. If more than six, class will study the same pages
and have the same homework assignments. Students sometimes use the Keys to Fractions, Decimals and
Measurement for variety or supplimental work. The class textbook, Spectrum Math Workbooks, is available at EIE
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 1:40 - 2:30
COST: $180 per semester
MATH 7
Review for mastery: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Percentages
are taught modeling proper algebra thinking skills. Chapters also cover: ratios, unit conversions, graphs, geometry,
introductory probability and statistics. The class textbook, Spectrum Math Workbooks, is available at EIE
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 10:30 - 11:20.
COST: $180 per semester
ALGEBRA 1 WITH WORD PROBLEMS
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 11:30 - 1:00
COST: $295 plus $70 for Algebra 1Textbook & full solutions answer key, written by Dorothy McCandliss.
This first semester of a two semester course will introduce basic algebraic terms and procedures in a logical,
sequential manner using visual and verbal cues to enhance learning and retention. There is a focus on
understanding the process rather than merely rote repetition.
My goal is that students will understand Algebra like a road map, knowing how and why to simplify and solve. At the
end of the class students should be able to take an algebra problem, be told to simplify or solve, and take it from the
beginning to the end, explaining what they did and whyl. I believe this skill to missing in most textbooks today and is
the reason I've written my own. My textbook includes Word Problems also taught logically-- working through word
problems that can be "translated" directly from English, and those that need formulas and charts.
First semester Algebra covers: combining, distributing, exponents, isolating, factoring (including the difference of two
squares and trinomials). Algebra I is excellent both as a refresher for those who have struggled with algebra before
and as a first course for any student who has mastered fractions, decimals and percents.
All new students must either take a placement test at EIE prior to taking the course or have passed Advanced
Arithmetic or Pre-Algebra (teacher discretion). This course uses Dorothy McCandliss Algebra I and Word Problem
textbooks.
GENTLE ALGEBRA
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 8:45 - 10:15 AM
COST:$295 Per semester plus material fee.
Some students struggle so much with math that the full scale algebra program above is unreasonable. I have several
students who will be continuing to work on the Keys to Algebra series and we're going to find a time for this class. New
students can join this class; students work at their own pace. Algebra 1 can be covered in 1-2 years this way.
Time: 1 1/2 hr class period, $295 per semester plus Keys to Algebra series ($60ish)

SPECIAL NOTICE
We are excited (but also sad) to announce that Sharon Ashford has accepted a full time position
teaching the IEW writing class at a private high school in Simi Valley. This is an important
professional step for Sharon and we wish her a tremendous amount of success in her well
deserved new endeavor.
We have enlisted the following teachers with Sharon's approval and counsel. Marsha Bradbury,
Lily Witczak and Denise Agron have completed IEW training seminars and are certified IEW
instructors. Marsha has been instrumental in the success of Hope Academy as well as in
homeschooling her own children. Denise is already an EIE Spanish teacher and homeschools as
well. Lily is a long time homeschooler and also teaches Latin.
While K. Titchenell is not a certified IEW teacher, he brings his college teaching experience and his

MEMORY CLASS
WHEN: FRIDAY 1:00 - 2:00 PM "and all week in the online classroom."
Acquiring the ability to memorize the easiest way for the student to gain the upper hand in education. Memorization is
the fast-food of the educational buffet, but in a mass-production educational system that is devoted and addicted to
that fast-food, it is one of the best tools for educational success. It also functions well as a solid scaffold for real
learning.
Memorization tricks and stratagems are presented and practiced, using vocabulary, formulae, algorithms, quotes, and
other educationally useful subject matter. Students are encouraged to bring subject matter they would like to learn.
Emphasis is on homeschooling flexibility and fun.
All text, video and audio resources are supplied free in our online classroom.
