Class Meetings: Fridays, 1:30 - 2:30 pm
First Session: January 6, 13, 20, 27
Cost: $45 tuition + $10 materials fee (continuing students $5 discount on materials fee)
If you would prefer to purchase your own supplies, I can provide you with a supply list.
In this class, everyone’s ability to make, look at, and talk about art is emphasized. Through explorations in value, line,
composition, perspective, color, and content, students will discover the excitement of drawing. Most class work is from
observation (interesting still life set-ups). Each class includes at least one group critique when students learn to look at
and talk about each other’s drawings. They learn to have confidence in their own ability to draw as well as seeing “what
makes a drawing work.”
Each month will have a different focus, concentrating on new drawing materials and content. Continuing students will
begin to develop and incorporate individual interests and meaning into their work. New students are welcome to join in
at the beginning of any monthly session.
We'll explore drawing with charcoal, oil pastel, pencil, collage, and other alternative art materials.
No previous art or drawing experience is required; projects can be modified for all levels of art and drawing experience.
Instructor: Jeanie Frias ("free-us") is a graduate of Otis College of Art and Design. She has over 15 years experience
teaching drawing, painting, and other art related topics to all ages and skill levels at Otis College, Occidental College,
the Alhambra School District, UCLA Extension, homeschool groups, and her private studio. She specializes in helping
young artists prepare for successful art college admission, and she loves it! She blogs about her teaching/mentoring

ELEMENTARY MATH CLASS
CLASSES TAUGHT BY DOROTHY McCANDLISS

2011-2012 Classes start Tuesday, Sept 14, 2010.
Maximum is 12 students per class.
$50 deposit for registration. Deposits are deducted from the cost of the class.
Checks to: Dorothy McCandliss
Mail to: 528 Mountain View St
Altadena CA 91001
Class fees are paid up front. If a payment plan is necessary, add $15 to the total and pay in 4 equal, monthly
payments.
Charter: Sky Mountain, Golden Valley, add $25 billing fee to the cost of the classes, per semester.
Placement tests: Algebra classes have a placement test: 4 page, 7th grade arithmetic final, sent as an e-mail pdf.
70% or better required.
Grades 4-7 placement by mom's intuition, or: (1) look at the Spectrum books' contents, (2) take a placement test for
the class you think the student needs, (3) make best guess and adjust placement as necessary.
Charter Student Placement: charters prefer the students to be in 1 grade level above the Spectrum titles per California
Standards. Example: a 4th grade student should be in the 5th grade book. We still need to place the students in
classes according to their skill level.
Algebra: A few students can do algebra in 7th grade, some in 8th, others are better off waiting until 9th grade It is
better to go at their learning level then force a schedule.
A public school math teacher said the results of forcing 7th grade algebra: more boys are failing algebra, and that to
take 4 years high school math the kids are forced into calculus and stats; which is too much for many of them.
MATH-STRUGGLING WITH ARITHMETIC
This is a multi-age class with an emphasis on adding, subtracting and learning to multiply. Games and activities
included to supplement the class textbook Spectrum Math 5.
If you are interested please give Dorothy Mc Candliss a call at 626-590-5883.
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 2:40 - 3:30.
COST: $180 per semester ($205 if a charter student).
PRE-ALGEBRA SKILLS (MATH 7)
Review for mastery: adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing whole numbers, fractions and decimals. Percentages
are taught modeling proper algebra thinking skills. Chapters also cover: ratios, unit conversions, graphs, geometry,
introductory probability and statistics.
SECOND SEMESTER: The class will start Pre-Algebra with an emphasis on the four functions and positive and
negative numbers, fractions, and decimals. Also included will to start on teaching beginning algebra principles and
work on the Spectrum 8 math book chapters on geometry, metric and graphs as supporting material.
The class textbook, Spectrum Math Workbook 8 and Fishers Integers, Problem Solving and Pre-Algebra, are available
at EIE.
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 10:40 - 11:30
COST: $190 per semester ($215.00 if a charter student).
ALGEBRA 1 WITH WORD PROBLEMS
WHEN: Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 - 10:30
COST: $295 plus $70 ($320 plus $70.00 for Charter students) for Algebra 1Textbook & full solutions answer key,
written by Dorothy McCandliss. Textbooks will be handed out in class.
This first semester of a two semester course will introduce basic algebraic terms and procedures in a logical,
sequential manner using visual and verbal cues to enhance learning and retention. There is a focus on
understanding the process rather than merely rote repetition.
My goal is that students will understand Algebra like a road map, knowing how and why to simplify and solve. At the
end of the class students should be able to take an algebra problem, be told to simplify or solve, and take it from the
beginning to the end, explaining what they did and why. I believe these skills are missing in most textbooks today and
this is the reason I've written my own. My textbook includes Word Problems also taught logically-- working through
word problems that can be "translated" directly from English, and those that need formulas and charts.
First semester Algebra covers: combining, distributing, exponents, isolating, factoring (including the difference of two
squares and trinomials). Algebra I is excellent both as a refresher for those who have struggled with algebra before
and as a first course for any student who has mastered fractions, decimals and percents.
All new students must either take a placement test at EIE prior to taking the course or have passed Advanced
Arithmetic or Pre-Algebra (teacher discretion). This course uses Dorothy McCandliss Algebra I and Word Problem
textbooks.

bring their own curriculum or assignments to the class. In this class,
students work at their own pace to complete assignments. The teacher will
instruct the student, brainstorm with the student, and model writing form
with the students, while helping the student mold and develop his/her own
style of writing. Since this is the first time this class is being offered there is
no grade/age restriction.
COST: $150 per semester. New students can join at any time during the
semester; the class will be prorated from first attendance to the end of the
class on May 21. No refunds.
