National Geographic Geography Bee

DATE:  Friday, January 6, 2012   (rain date: Jan. 13)
TIME:  1:00 PM
COST:  FREE
EELIGIBILITY:  4TH –8TH GRADE STUDENTS (AGE LIMIT 16)
LOCATION:  Brookside Park near the Kidspace Museum
There will be prizes and a certificate for all grade levels participating. There
is also a  medal from National Geographic for the winner.  The winner may
also elect to take a written test to qualify for the State Bee.  EIE has had two
previous winners compete at the state level  and one at the national level!  
No special prior study is required although a general knowledge of  U.S. and
world geography is desirable.    

Join the EIE Geography Games class (Wednesdays at 1:30 PM) if you
want a fun way to learn more geography.


ICE SKATING

DATE:          Wednesday, January 18, 2012
TIME:          9:15 AM — 11:00
COST:         $7.00 per person (includes skate rental)
PLACE:        Pasadena Ice Skating Center, 300 East Green Street, Pasadena
               next to Civic Auditorium
PARKING:   Approx. $7.00 in the Sheraton lot -or- across the street:
              $1.00 per hr with a validation from the Paseo Pasadena mall
              (no purchase required).  
BEGINNERS:  wear mittens, gloves, or warm socks on hands.

This is a great opportunity for all ages.  There will be a 25-minute lesson
followed by a free skate period.  We will have the rink to ourselves (or
possibly with another small group) so your skaters can practice their skills
without fear of being mowed down by more experienced skaters.  
Teens:  This is a great chance to meet other teens.  Dress warmly—this is
an ICE rink!!!

DIRECTIONS: Exit 91 Fwy on Maple St. Exit and turn R on
Maple/Sixth.  Just after Paseo Grande, take a quick L onto the R side
of the Thrifty Gas Station.  Go through the chain link fence gate and
park near the white building, near the Quality Toyota dealership.
If you can’t visit Washington D.C. this year, this tour is a good
substitute.  Students will visit a full-scale replica of the Oval Office
(Bring your cameras for a photo op with the President!), enjoy a film
describing the obstacles our founding fathers overcame in
establishing our government, participate in a digital scavenger hunt in
the computer lab, see detailed scale models of Capitol Hill, including
replicas depicting the interiors of the House, Senate, and Supreme
Court buildings in session.

We have two classes booked at 11:00:
Where’s the Air?  For K-6th grades—Explore the properties of air
as you use a variety of equipment in the Big Lab including the Wind
Wall and Mega Tower.  Does air have weight?  Can it move things
around?  How can we use it to help us?  Students will investigate
these questions and more during this program. (75 min.)
Cow Eye Dissection for grades 6-8+ - This program includes all
required materials, including the cow eye, dissecting tray and gloves.  
Students will work in pairs to dissect a cow eye.  They will see the
major structures of the eye and explore how they work together to
produce images. (60 min.)
IMAX:  TBA—the schedule for January is not up yet.  We will go
to the theater after the classes. Bring lunch!
