REGULAR CLASSES INTRODUCTION TO MODEL MAKING Taught by Robert Stuard TWO HOUR CLASSES ON FRIDAYS SEE SCHEDULE BELOW $40.00 PER MONTH OK, we know that you are thinking that this is a class for making model cars, planes or boats from plastic kits. Well, guess what, you are wrong! This is a real modeling class that will teach the student how to create (conceptualize) from basic building blocks fantastic creations of three dimensional items, much like an architect would build to present his ideas to a client. Through the use of basic mathematics, a ruler, wood, cardboard, glue and other building materials you will create a model buildings or other objects. The student will learn how to take a vision (concept) and convert it to a fantastic three dimensional object. This will be a great class!! Parents are encouraged to attend at no additional cost to observe and participate in this class. This is an excellent course for students who are not ready for Algebra I. ALGEBRA IA Taught by Dorothy Mc Candliss Wednesdays and Fridays 9:30 am – 10:30 am $200.00 + $16.00 Material Fee per Semester Call Dorothy at (626) 797-8594 or 590-5883 This first semester of a two semester course will introduce basic algebraic terms and procedures in a logical, sequential manner using visual and verbal cues to enhance learning and retention. There is a focus on understanding rather than merely rote repetition. This four month semester covers: combining, distributing, exponents, isolating, factoring (including the difference of two squares and trinomials). Algebra IA is excellent both as a refresher for those who have struggled with algebra before and as a first course for any student who has mastered fractions, decimals and percents. All new students must either take a placement test at EIE prior to taking the course or have passed Advanced Arithmetic or Pre-Algebra (teacher discretion). This course uses Dorothy McCandliss’ Algebra I textbook. Limited to 15 students *Algebra 1B and Word Problems will be offered in the spring. Completion and mastery of this class will prepare and qualify students for most colleges and universities. This is a two semester (full year) course. All students must have mastered Algebra 1. This is equivalent to Junior College Intermediate Algebra. Plenty of examples and problem sets to insure a mastery of the subject matter. The following classes are for our Junior High and High School students. These are full science classes including labs. Be prepared for an extensive but fun science course. EARTH SCIENCE 8th grade level Tuesday 12:30 – 2:00 Instructor: Jill Wilcox This class will cover material in the following areas: stars and planets, the sun, asteroids, comets, meteors, the space program, weather, rocks and minerals, fossils, mountain formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, erosion, glaciers and more! This course includes lectures, hands-on labs, homework assignments, quizzes, two field trips and a science fair. Cost: $400.00 per year with payments due by September 2, 2005 and January 31, 2006. A textbook and lab book are required, all other materials are included in the cost of the class. Textbook: “Earth Science for Christian Schools-second edition” -BJU Press $32.00 and Lab Manual $14.00. Used textbooks may be available. New books and Lab Manuals may be purchased at EIE. PHYSICAL SCIENCE 9th grade level Tuesdays 2:30 – 4:00 Instructor: Jill Wilcox This class will cover material in the following areas; the scientific method, energy and motion, acceleration and momentum, matter (solid, liquid, gas), atomic structure and chemical bonds, properties of substances, light, sound waves, electricity, electronics, nuclear reactions and energy sources. This course includes lecture, hands-on labs, homework assignments, quizzes, and a science fair. A basic understanding of Algebra is necessary for this course. Cost Tuition is $400.00 per year with payments ($200.00) due by September 2, 2005 and January 31, 2006. A textbook and lab book are required, all other materials are included in the cost of the class. Textbook: “Physical Science” – Glencoe. This is the 1999 edition and you may purchase it used at www.fes.follett.com or new from EIE. Lab Book: “Physical Science Laboratory Manual” – Glencoe. You must pre-order this book through Carolyn at EIE (626) 821-0025, she will only order books that are prepaid. Books must be ordered by July. A NOTE ABOUT THE PHYSICAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOK: Although Glencoe is a secular publisher, Science 2-u has chosen to switch to this book for two reasons. First, it explains the material in a MUCH SIMPLER manner than the BJU book and secondly, language on origins doesn’t come up in Physical Science since we are dealing with chemistry and physics only. BIOLOGY 10th grade level Tuesdays 4:30 – 6:30 Instructor: Jill Wilcox This class will include such topics as introduction to Chemistry, cell biology, protein synthesis, photosynthesis, thorough coverage of genetics, evolution and creation, classification and a survey of the kingdoms including monerans, viruses, fungi, plants, invertebrates, arthropods and vertebrates. This course meets weekly for 2 hours (1 hour of lecture and 1 hour of lab). Weekly homework assignments from the textbook, lab reports and handouts will be completed by the students at home each week. There will be 1-2 long-term projects. Tests will be sent home with the student to be administered by their parent and returned to class the following week. Two in-class practicum tests will be given by the instructor. Prerequisite for biology is successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Algebra I. Cost $450.00 per year with payments of $225.00 due by September 2, 2005 and January 31, 2006. A textbook is required; all other materials are included in the cost of the class. The required textbook Biology for Christian Schools 3rd edition (Bob Jones University Press) may be ordered through EIE. Lab book (published by Science 2-U) will cost $20.00 and will be available on the first day of class. ELEMENTARY SCIENCE The following courses are designed for K-6th grade students. Parents are always welcome to attend these classes with their children. Each subject is 4 weeks in duration. All classes are being taught by Heather Klingsporn. Each four week session is $40.00. All classes will be taught on Wednesdays with a choice of two sessions each day. The sessions are: 2:00 – 3:00 and 3:15 - 4:15 pm! The choice is yours. We will use levers and pulleys to do the hard work for us, and design our own machines to lift and pull. ANIMAL BEHAVIOR October 12, 19, 26 and November 2. What is the difference between an earthworm and a mealworm? What does a snail eat? Is an earthworm's favorite spot, light or dark, warm or dry? Answer these and many more questions about slimy critters! WHAT IS MATTER November 9, 16, 30 and December 7 How do you define life? What is the difference between living and non-living objects? What are the differences between solids, liquids, and gases? What causes some things to float while others sink? These and many more questions will be answered as we explore the world of matter. EXCITING ENERGY January 4, 11, 18, and 25 Learn how energy "works", what the three types of energy are, how to transfer it, how to produce it, and how to calculate how much you produce. Filled with lots of cool, energetic experiments! MARINE LIFE February 1, 8, 15, and 22 Discover everything from fish and sharks to invertebrates and the kelp forest. This class includes lots of fun activities and a field trip to a marine laboratory. LIGHTS, MIRRORS AND LENSES March 1, 8, 15, and 22 Surf the waves of light. What happens to light as it passes through a lens? You will use a laser beam to discover some of the properties of light and construct pinhole cameras to show how light travels. H2O – THAT’S WATER March 29, April 5, 12, and 26 We will learn about one of the most abundant substances on earth. Why is it so amazing and why do we need to protect it? We will perform water testing experiments and design our own water filters. THE INSECTS ARE COMING May 3, 10, 17 and 21 Come explore the fascinating world of these six-legged wonders. We'll learn about the life-cycle of bees, ants, lady-bugs, crickets, and grasshoppers. We'll even spend some time dissecting some huge grasshoppers. Students will become prepared to continue with English for Homeschoolers and more advanced topics including vocabulary, grammar, writing style, communication, business and personal correspondence, sentence structures, metaphor, scansion, imagery and more. Starting with Unit III of the IEW curriculum, students will review basic structure and style through various writing assignments and move towards advanced dress-ups, persuasive writing, and expanded essays and critiques. Students will also participate in literary analysis and discussion using the Socratic Method. From identifying the five elements of fiction to recognizing literary devices; students will have an opportunity to practice analyzing, interpreting and understanding literature. Honors and High School students will have additional reading and writing homework assigned with this course. This class/club is for those who want to really know geography and enjoy a competitive setting. We will use games, maps and practice Bees to develop fluency with geography. Matthew Beelby, a World Chess Federation World Master, Senior Master United States Chess Federation and Certified Chess Coach with over 25 years teaching Chess, will teach all aspects of scholastic chess techniques including strategy. Directed to the beginner regardless of skill and developing those who want to progress to tournament class individuals. There is a $30.00 material fee for class book and numbered/lettered chess set. Can we prevent obesity, Adult Type 2 Diabetes, etc? Come and discover the true athlete within you. This class will cover diet, nutrition, anatomy, physiology (tied together with applied kinesiology), along with muscular fitness assessment tests and guidelines for strength and endurance training. This is a very good hands-on type of class to maximize learning. COLLEGE PREP ECONOMICS Taught by Mark Cruthers (909) 920-9137 May 18 – June 3 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday 4:00 – 7:00 PM Tuition: $325.00 REGISTRATION DEADLINE: MAY 5 You may know Mr. Cruthers as the Advanced Placement instructor for United States and European history. He is now offering a course in Economics starting on May 18th. This will be a two week accelerated course teaching College Prepatory Economics. This will be as good if not better than an introductory college level course. Mr. Cruthers is a very interesting teacher and students enrolled in his AP courses love the classes. Class will cover common economic terms, elements of supply and demand, property rights, market systems, U.S. labor market, economic indicators and a wealth of other information. Well worth the cost of the class. The textbook Economic Principles and Practices will be available at EIE. Registration must be in by May 5 with a non-refundable $50.00 deposit, total tuition due on first day of class. COMPUTER CLASS How are your computer skills? If they are like mine, they are in need of improvement. Denis Titchenell, a computer wizard, is willing to offer computer classes this Fall. PHYSICAL EDUCATION CLASSES Taught by Regina Tula, CPT (626) 641-3280 This class will be offered during our Park Days (Mondays 12:00 noon at Eisenhower Park in Arcadia) from 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. If you participated in the previous PE Program you will like this one. The same attitude of healthy competition and mastery of the various field and track activities will be offered. If you are looking for a great P.E. program, this just might be it. Children will learn components of exercise and activities as well as have fun. Regina Tula is a very knowledgeable and fun instructor. Activities will include: track and field events, badminton, basketball, football, soccer, horseshoes and other great family activities.
